I’m not an expert on trade or economics, but from what I understand, this could very well be a negotiation tactic. Trump’s approach clearly breaks with the Biden administration’s quiet accommodation of India’s energy pragmatism.



India doesn’t seem to be backing down. There’s no policy reversal, nor is there any indication that India will halt oil imports under external pressure. However, India is actively working on its energy security by enhancing resilience and reducing overdependence on Russia through the strategic diversification of crude sources. This includes a rise in imports from the U.S. and Brazil, alongside other imperative measures.



Shouldn't this reassure Washington that India is acting not as a rogue actor, but as a pragmatic and responsible energy consumer operating within the constraints of its domestic imperatives and global partnerships?



I hope all the trade and energy rhetoric remains in a diplomatic sandbox and doesn’t spill over into the broader strategic relationship between India and the U.S. The next decade is critical for India as it aims to realize its military modernization goals, many of which hinge on support from the U.S. I sincerely hope the current turbulence doesn’t derail India’s progress in narrowing the military and strategic gap with China in the Indo-Pacific region.

Honestly, India has a point here. The US and EU talk about isolating Russia, but they’ve still been buying Russian energy and critical resources when it suits their interests. Meanwhile, they expect countries like India to completely cut ties, even if it hurts their own economy.

It’s kind of the classic double standard in geopolitics—“do as I say, not as I do.” Every country is going to prioritize its own energy security first, and India is just being upfront about it.
